The Traded Finish
Cosmetic — Tradable, Market-Priced · Issued by Valve
A decoration that acquired a market, and then a mania.
The Traded Finish began as pure ornament — a coat of paint upon a weapon, altering nothing of its function — and became, by virtue of scarcity and a marketplace, an asset. Certain specimens have changed hands for sums exceeding the price of the software they adorn many times over.
The object thus closed the distance between the cosmetic and the commodity. It could be won from a sealed capsule, sold to another visitor, and speculated upon.
The remainder of this placard is reserved for the museum’s patrons. Your contribution of $2.00 ensures the continued preservation of this exhibit.
Provenance
- Tradable, market-priced finishes are introduced.
- A secondary skin economy reaches significant scale.
- Individual specimens trade at extraordinary prices.
