A decoration that acquired a market, and then a mania.

The Traded Finish began as pure ornament — a coat of paint upon a weapon, altering nothing of its function — and became, by virtue of scarcity and a marketplace, an asset. Certain specimens have changed hands for sums exceeding the price of the software they adorn many times over.

The object thus closed the distance between the cosmetic and the commodity. It could be won from a sealed capsule, sold to another visitor, and speculated upon.

The finish demonstrates the endpoint of the discipline: a decoration with no use, produced at no marginal cost, sustaining a secondary economy of real consequence. The museum regards it as the collection's most complete object — capsule, cosmetic, currency, and market fused into one.

That an ornament altering nothing should command the prices it does is not evidence of the visitors' foolishness. It is evidence of the mechanism's success. The museum declines to distinguish between the two.
